There's more to life than being happy.

Emily Esfahani Smith, TED. Happiness comes and goes. But when life is really good and when things are really bad, having meaning gives you something to hold on to (As Emily said). At the beginning, the speaker shared her experience of searching for happiness. Consequently, she felt puzzled and finally gave up. Because she found that chasing happiness can make people unhappy. After reading books of different fields to looking for what truly makes one happy, she realized that, having meaning is the answer. She now has four pillar of meaning. The first pillar is belonging, which is about relationships where you value people around you and where they value you in turn. Secondly, the pillar of meaning is purpose. Emily found that serving others as your purpose can make you happy and truly motivated. Thirdly, it is transcendence, which is a kind of state where your sense of self fades away and you feel connected to a higher reality. For the speaker, who is a writer, finds this state through writing when she feels losing the time and space. The final pillar, is storytelling. It is about how you treat OR view your life and experience. In the end, the speaker summarized that there's need for people to have meaning in life, which counts to everyone.  |
