Dear Colleagues, Nowadays, over half of the global population lives in urbanized areas and, according to world urbanization speed, 70% of the world¡¯s population will probably be urban residents by 2050. Anthropogenic activities associated with industrialization and urbanization are dramatically concentrated in urban areas, especially in developing countries. In terms of resource consumption and chemical emissions, cities have caused a variety of problems including ecosystem degradation, public health risk, biodiversity decrease, and so on. Urban environmental toxins, including heavy metals, metalloids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, benzene series compounds, etc., have been regarded as a hazard to citizens due to their toxicity, persistence, and biological accumulation. Risk to civil health can be caused by environmental toxins through multi-pathways, owing to their transport and transformation among environmental multi-media such as ambient air, soil, water, etc. Unfortunately, after long-time research, the present advances in human technology have not reduced that risk effectively. In fact, the increased industrialization and urbanization of the developing world, the enhanced demand for resources, and the advent of new technologies have increased the risk of exposure to these toxins. In recent decades, health risk assessment and management associated with dose-response relationship studies, urban epidemiologic studies, exposure evaluation, etc. have been established as valuable tool to support the national or regional quantitative regulatory systems and administrative decision-making for urban environmental toxins. Historically, health risk assessments have tended to focus narrowly on a single toxin with an indicator of its total concentration, usually emphasizing a specific human health endpoint and a particular exposure pathway for hypothetical receptors. But it is obvious that multi-receptors in the real world are routinely exposed to urban environmental toxins in environmental multimedia from multi-pathways. Furthermore, the exciting progress on studies about toxin analytical techniques, toxins¡¯ bioavailability and combined effects, spatial analysis technology, exposure science, healthcare technologies, etc. have the potential to promote the current method of health risk assessment and the risk-based management. Thus, this Special Issue will encourage and highlight the new or improved approaches, models, and theories that either have been applied or are under development to moving the field forward in studying public exposure and health risk management posed by urban environmental toxins from multi-pathway exposure in environmental multimedia. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: •Urban water, soil, and air toxins •Toxin migration and transformation mechanisms •Dose-response relationship •Epidemiological studies •Public exposure evaluation •Health risk assessment •Multimedia, multi-pathway and multi-receptor •Modelling approaches •Public healthcare technologies and systems Manuscript Due: 18 December 2017 Guest Editor: Fei Li, Research Center for Environment and Health, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, China [ Last edited by è¾è¾ on 2017-9-13 at 16:43 ] |
