Three PhD Student Positions in Bioinformatics Available at USD

Three graduate student positions with research/teaching assistantships are available in the Department of Biology at the University of South Dakota (USD). One position starts immediately from spring 2018, and the other two start from fall 2018. The research projects are within the general areas of bioinformatics, computational systems biology, biological big data mining, comparative genomics, and functional genomics. Current research involves the development and application of new algorithms and computational methods for analyzing high-throughput and large-scale biological data, including various omics data obtained from next-generation sequencing platforms. Graduate students will be enrolled in the PhD program in biology with a specialization in bioinformatics. Recently, the South Dakota Board of Regents has approved this new bioinformatics academic program (https://news.sd.gov/newsitem.aspx?id=22115). Courses will focus on biology, as well as mathematics, statistics, and computer science (https://catalog.usd.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=23&poid=3538), enabling doctoral students to collaborate on high-level research projects. Students enrolled will be trained in a multidisciplinary environment and has opportunity to collaborate with biologists and computer scientists. Specialization in bioinformatics within the biology PhD program will appear on a student’s transcript.
