[LEADER/RESEARCHER]:
Alex Zettl

[RESEARCH INTERESTS/CURRENT PROJECTS]:
We are currently investigating electronic, magnetic and mechanical properties of nanoscale materials such as fullerenes, carbon and non-carbon nanotubes, and two dimensional sheet structures such as graphene and boron nitride.  We are also interested in unusual electronic ground states in conventional and high temperature superconductors and charge density wave materials.  In our laboratory, we synthesize these materials and investigate their properties using a variety of techniques including transmission and scanning electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, high magnetic field and high pressure transport measurement, and IR and Raman spectroscopy. We also investigate biological application of nanotechnology.

[RESEARCH INTERESTS/CURRENT PROJECTS]:
Our research centers on the development of new chemistry, physics, and technological applications of nanomaterials -- a novel class of  materials with feature size <100 nm. New technologies will emerge from these materials that can improve the way we live just as microtechnology has done over the past several decades.
1. Understanding and Control of Nanomaterial Synthesis
2. Colloidal Self-Assembly and Photonic Crystals
3. Biomedical Applications of Nanomaterials

REsearch Highlights:

One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures are of both fundamental and technological interest. They not only exhibit interesting electronic and optical properties intrinsically associated with their low dimensionality and the quantum confinement effect, but also represent the critical components in the potential nanoscale device applications. With the ever-decreasing sizes of these 1D nanostructures, the "bottom-up" chemical approach is playing increasing role due to its capability of making much smaller features as compared to the "top-down" approach. Major challenge, however, remains in order to fully exploit the 1D nanostructures, namely, the development of suitable chemical strategies for the rational synthesis, organization and integration of these nanoscale building blocks.
The Yang research group is interested in the synthesis of new classes of materials and nanostructures, with an emphasis on developing new synthetic approaches and understanding the fundamental issues of structural assembly and growth that will enable the rational control of material composition, micro/nano-structure, property and functionality. We are interested in the fundamental problems of electron, photon, and phonon confinement as well as spin manipulation within 1-dimensional nanostructures.

Education and Work History
1983 Moscow Institute of Steels and Alloys (Technological University), Ms.Sc, Russia 1990 Moscow Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy, Ph.D, Russia 1990 Senior Researcher, Moscow Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy, Russia 1993 Visiting Researcher, University of Tsukuba 1994 Visiting Researcher, Max-Planck Institute fuer Eisenforschung, Germany 1995 Visiting Researcher, National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials, Tsukuba 1996 Visiting Researcher, National Institute for Metals, Tsukuba 1997 Researcher, National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials, Tsukuba 1998 Fellow, Japan Science and Technology Corporation 2001 Senior Researcher, National Institute for Material Science, Tsukuba, Japan 2005 Associate Director, Nanomaterials Laboratory, National Institute for Material Science, Tsukuba, Japan 2005- Associate Professor, University of Tsukuba, Japan 2006- Group Leader, Nanoscale Materials Center, National Institute for Material Science, Tsukuba, Japan Research History

Dmitri Golberg has a wide background and strong command in the synthesis, electron microscopy, and physical property measurements of BN and other inorganic nanotubes. He found a BN nanotube (not known at that time) in 1995. Since then he became a world-recognized expert in this field and published more than 85 papers solely on this topic. He has also deeply studied shape memory alloys while working as a visiting researcher at the University of Tsukuba, and single crystals of intermetallic compounds while being a guest scientist at the Max-Planck-Institute fuer Eisenforschung, and the National Institute for Metals, Tsukuba. Such joined unprecedented experience in nanotubes and metallic alloys allows him to launch a new and promising interesting field of nanoscale studies: physics, chemistry and functional properties of inorganic nanotubes filled with metals. Recently he became fully engaged in electromechanical property measurements of individual nanotubes inside transmission electron microscope. Golberg is author or co-author of more than 250 original papers in peer-reviewed International journals and 85 patents. He has also authored book chapters, as: "Electron Microscopy of Nanotubes" (Kluwer Academic Press, 2003), "Boron Nitride Nanotubes" (AIP publishing, 2004), "In-situ Transmission Electron Microscopy of Filled Nanotubes" (Wiley & Sons 2007), and "Heterogeneous Nanotubes" (Wiley & Sons 2008).
