During  an  interview2  with  a  husband-respondent  about  significant
events  in his  marriage  and family  history,  I  asked:  “You  wouldn’t call
those times  though troubling times? Uh, low points in that sense?” The
question came about 22minutes into the interview. Its immediate context
was  a structured question  asking him to review a time chart,  beginning
with the date of marriage, to select those years he would consider “high”
and “low” points; after this screening question, he was to be asked about
what  “was  going  on”  at each  of these  times.  The respondent had been
having difficulty making this determination between high and low points,
and was talking about recurrent periods of financial distress when I asked
this question.
