With this respect, the existence of a platform of numerous different—if possible R- and S-selective—enzymes for a given chemical transformation as an “off-the-shelf” technology can be of great value for the fast evaluation of the feasibility of an enzymatic reaction in a multistep synthesis route. This is especially important for early-stage drug development where strict timelines usually impede the laborious and hence time-consuming process of biocatalyst discovery and optimization. |
