Charge Transport in Tailored Molecular Junctions at
Electrochemical Solid/Liquid Interfaces
Task description:The Laboratory of Surface and Nanoelectrochemistry at the University of Bern (CH) invites
candidates for a new opened PhD Student position. The planned research is part of an
interdisciplinary and co-operative Program (funded by an FP7-EU mobility project) on self-
assembly and charge transport in metal©¦molecule©¦metal nanostructures at electrochemical
interfaces. We aim to locally explore electron transport and switching processes of single
molecules as well as molecular assemblies by employing concepts of ¡°electrolyte gating¡± in
an electrochemical environment. The experimental strategies are based on a vertical
scanning probe microscopy configuration in combination with single crystal electrochemistry
and in-situ vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman). The project will provide unique new
insight into electron transport processes in nanostructured assemblies and tailored molecular
hybrid structures which are triggered by electrical stimuli with potential applications towards
molecular redox switches and storage elements.
Candidates profile:The ideal candidate holds an MSc or an equivalent degree in chemistry, physics or a
related discipline with a strong interest in interfacial and nanoelectrochemistry. He or she
is keen to work in cutting-edge science projects, and has a strong experimental
background in analytical and measuring techniques. Hands-on experience in applications
of in-situ scanning probe microscopies (STM/STS, AFM) would be an asset but is not
required. The candidate should be highly motivated, creative and fluently in English. The
position offers excellent research possibilities in a very active inter-disciplinary and
international group of young scientists.

PhD - Position in Surface Electrochemistry:
Interfacial Spectroscopy
Task description:
The research is focused on vibration spectroscopy at solid/liquid interfaces employing insitu
surface enhanced infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) under
conditions of attenuated total reflection (ATR). The first goal is to explore the vibronic
properties of the electrochemical double layer on thin mono- and bimetallic films (c.f. gold,
silver, platinum,..). The second goal comprises studies of functionalized adlayers with
focus on interfacial electron transfer as well as on selected electrocatalytic processes
under ¡°steady-state¡± conditions and in time-resolved experiments. The strategy involves
the combination of the structure-sensitive spectroscopic studies with in-situ scanning
tunneling microscopy (STM) and ¡°macroscopic¡± electrochemical techniques based on
custom-made single crystal electrodes. The program is part of an international
collaboration, and offers unique possibilities in a very active interdisciplinary group of
young scientists in an attractive research environment.
Candidates profile:
The ideal candidate holds an MSc or an equivalent degree in chemistry, physics or a
related discipline with a great interest in interfacial electrochemistry and spectroscopy. He
or she is keen to work in cutting-edge science projects, and has a strong experimental
background in analytical and measuring techniques. Hands-on experience in vibrational
spectroscopy (Infrared, Raman) at surfaces would be an asset but is not required. The
candidate should be highly motivated, creative and fluently in English.

Postdoctoral fellowship in
Interfacial Spectroelectrochemistry
Task description:
The research is focused on vibration spectroscopy at solid/liquid interfaces employing insitu
surface enhanced infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) in
combination with confocal Raman Microscopy to explore structure and reactivity properties
of functional molecular and metal adlayer at electrochemical solid/liquid interfaces. The
research will be focused on fundamental aspects of electrocatalytic processes, which are
of particular relevance to electron transfer reactions taking place in ¡°classical¡± fuel cells
and bio-fuel cells. The strategy involves the combination of structure-sensitive spectroscopic
studies with in-situ scanning probe microscopy and ¡°macroscopic¡± electrochemical
techniques employing single crystal electrodes. The program is part of an international
collaboration (FP7 EU project), and offers unique possibilities in a very active
interdisciplinary group of young scientists in an attractive research environment.
Candidates profile:
We are looking for a person with a PhD in Interfacial Electrochemistry, preferably in the
field of in-situ infrared (IRAS, SEIRAS) an/or surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy
(SERS, Nano-Raman), who is interested to work in a cutting-edge interdisciplinary science
program and is highly motivated to take up challenging and demanding experimental
research projects. We expect the candidate to be creative, communicate fluently in English
(or German) and to develop into a leader who can supervise students in the lab providing
hands-on experience. The successful candidate will be also encouraged to develop his or
her own project ideas within the scope of the current activities. The position is initially setup
for a period of 2 years with an option for prolongation.
