Electric Machine with Low Cost or High Reliability

Electric machines have been widely adopted by a variety of applications, including electric/hybrid electric vehicles, wind power generators, more electric aircrafts, industrial drives, and automations, etc. Currently, various topologies of electric machines have been proposed and novel topologies are emerging. Although the electric machines with permanent magnet offer high torque density, power density and high efficiency. However, due to the relatively high cost and the limited resource of rare-earth magnets, less or no rare-earth magnet machines are desirable. Such machines include hybrid-excited, wound field-excited, and PM-assisted synchronous reluctance machines, etc., which are currently being developed for various applications with new topologies. Meanwhile, reliability is another key issue which needs to be concerned. The technologies of fault-tolerance for safety-critical applications have received great attentions and kinds of fault-tolerant rotating machines have been developed with multi-phase, fractional slot concentrated winding and fault-tolerant teeth.

The main objective of this special issue is to collect the ideas of the worldwide researchers and present the latest progresses and developments in design, modeling, and control of rotating machines with cost reduction or reliability improvement. Topics of interest of this special session include, but are not limited to:

•        Electric machines with hybrid excitation
•        Permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance machines
•        Non rare earth permanent magnet machines
•        Fault-tolerant electric machines
•        Novel modeling and analysis methods of permanent magnet machines with cost reduction or reliability improvement
•        Novel fault-tolerant control strategies for fault-tolerant permanent magnet machines
•        Applications of permanent magnet machines with cost reduction or reliability improvement
