PhD positions in systems and computational biology at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain Why do individuals look and behave differently from each other? Our lab is interested in how two major sources of variation, genetic and stochastic, lead to phenotypic differences among individual cells and organisms. To understand how brief stochastic events lead to heritable phenotypic differences among organisms we combine high-throughput single-cell measurements with mathematical models in order to learn the precise molecular mechanisms that underlie specific cellular processes in single cells (van Dijk et al. 2015) . We are also interested in understanding the role that biological errors play in shaping gene expression and natural selection (Carey 2015) . We are also interested in understanding the genotype to phenotype map, specifically with regards to how mutations interact epistatically to determine both fitness and gene expression. To do so we vary genotype using large libraries of synthetic constructs and determine how sequence alters both expression and/or fitness (van Dijk et al. 2017) . The lab is located in a newly built building on the beach in Barcelona and a ten-minute walk from the heart of the city. Position responsibilities : • Analyzing next-generation sequencing data. • Designing mathematical models of gene expression and/or proliferation. • Perform experiments using budding yeast and mammalian cell culture. • Programming experience is required, Matlab, Python or R are preferred. • Experience working with next-generation sequencing data is preferred. • English is required, Spanish is not required. please send your C.V. to Lucas Carey lucas.carey@upf.edu https://www.upf.edu/scb/ |
