The Mass Spectrometrist for Metabolomics serves as a pioneer for metabolomics services for the Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility at the Institute of Biotechnology/Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC). The facility provides fee-for-service access to advanced technologies in protein and small molecule identification and characterization through Liquid Chromatographic Mass Spectrometry. Customers of the facility include faculty, researchers, staff and students from Cornell University, Weill Cornell Medicine, and external non-profit and for-profit institutions. The position is part of a high-energy, cutting-edge Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Facility team and requires the ability to participate in multi-disciplinary research in a collaborative setting.
The Institute of Biotechnology is a dynamic hub for life sciences research at Cornell University. The Institute offers cutting edge biotechnologies, expertise in applications, technology testing and development and consultation for life sciences researchers at Cornell University and outside institutions. The Institute houses the Center for Life Science Enterprise to assist life science researchers develop biotechnologies with commercial potential in partnership with New York industries, and the Kevin M. McGovern Family Center for Venture Development in the Life Sciences, a state-of-the-art business incubator for emerging biotechnology companies.

1、 Position Opening – Mass Spectrometrist for Metabolomics

• Assist in the development and implementation of various sample preparation, LC-/MS/MS and GC-MS techniques for metabolomics analysis, as well as subsequent MS data interpretation.
• Responsible for LC-MS/MS and GC-MS analyses on a variety of samples prepared from complex biological sources, operation and maintenance of an advanced LC-MS and a GC-MS instrument, as well as several untargeted metabolomics-based database search engines and bioinformatics tools.
• Provide interpretation of mass spectra for structural elucidation, consultation on metabolomics project design and data analysis, and post-MS analysis data interpretation for facility customers.
• Develop standard operating and quality assurance procedures covering sample preparation and multiple LC separation technology for variable metabolomics samples.
• Work as part of a scientific team, and contribute to the organization and safety compliance of the laboratory.
• Write a variety of technical and project reports for facility users and PIs.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
• PhD degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or related discipline with strong organic chemistry background.
• At least three years LC-MS experience on metabolomics research, with significant knowledge of small molecule/drug metabolism with basic metabolic reactions, and MS-associated bioinformatics tools for untargeted metabolomics profiling and identifications.
• Must possess a strong work ethic and self-motivation.
• Excellent communication, attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Excellent computer skills and experience (e.g., Microsoft Office)
• Basic statistics knowledge
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Skills:
• Previous experience on GC-MS, NMR, operation of Thermo’s UltiMate3000 LC system and Orbitrap mass spectrometer, and knowledge of Compound Discoverer software are highly preferred.
• Knowledge of proteomics and/or transcriptomics research is preferred.

2、 Position Opening – Mass Spectrometrist for Proteomics

The Mass Spectrometrist for Proteomics will fulfill the following critical roles:
• Assist in the development and implementation of various sample preparation, LC-/MS/MS techniques for proteomics and metabolomics analysis, and subsequent post-MS data interpretation.
• Perform sample preparation for gel or LC separated proteins prior to MS analysis. Develop and implement multiple dimensional LC separation for protein samples from complex biological sources.
• Responsible for LC-MS/MS analyses on a variety of samples prepared from complex biological sources, operation and maintenance of several advanced HPLC and electrospray mass spectrometric instruments, as well as several proteomics-based database search engines.
• Work as part of a scientific team, and contribute to the organization and safety compliance of the laboratory.
• Supervise junior laboratory staff and facility users including undergraduate and graduate students.
• Train collaborators for multi-disciplinary research projects, and participate in lectures and demonstration activities for MS technology workshops.
• Write a variety of technical and project reports for facility users and PIs and contribute to the preparation of publications and grant proposals.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
• PhD degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or related discipline.
• At least two years LC-MS experience on metabolomics research, with demonstrated understanding of current proteomics technologies.
• Significant knowledge of MS-associated bioinformatics tools, and excellent MS data interpretation skills.
• Must possess a strong work ethic and self-motivation.
• Excellent communication, attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Excellent computer skills and experience (e.g., Microsoft Office)
• Strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Skills:
• Previous experience on operation of Thermo’s UltiMate 3000 LC system and Orbitrap mass spectrometer
