This book describes the role of photoacoustic (PA) infrared spectroscopy in
chemical analysis. The PA infrared field has enjoyed more or less continual
development since its emergence about 30 years ago: A substantial body of
literature—consisting of more than 600 publications—on PA infrared spectroscopy
exists today. The present work attempts to review and synthesize
this literature; one of its principal objectives is to summarize the current
status of PA infrared spectroscopy so that analysts and researchers may
determine whether the method is indeed appropriate for their needs.
PA infrared spectroscopy can be viewed from several perspectives. For
example, it can be thought of as one of a large number of photoacoustic
and photothermal methods currently used by physicists, materials scientists,
and chemists to characterize both condensed phases and gases. It should be
noted that both optical and thermal properties of matter can be investigated
by these methods. From this viewpoint, PA infrared spectroscopy is a specialization
within a much broader field, made possible by the development
and application of a variety of detectors and optical instrumentation at
progressively longer wavelengths. Some might suggest that this interpretation,
while obviously valid, tends to ascribe a rather secondary status to PA
infrared spectroscopy.
