Platelets play a central role in the spontaneous process of atherothrombosis and in the formation of thrombi following coronary stent implantation. Platelets initially adhere to exposed subendothelial collagen, von Willebrand factor and other proteins at sites of vascular injury, atherosclerotic plaque rupture, and balloon dilatation with stenting.
