Title: XXXXXXX
Journal: Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis
Dear Dr. XX,
Thank you for submitting your manuscript to Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis. The reviewers recommend reconsideration of your paper following revision. I invite you to resubmit your manuscript after addressing all reviewer comments.
When resubmitting your manuscript, please carefully consider all issues mentioned in the reviewers' comments, outline every change made point by point, and provide suitable rebuttals for any comments not addressed.
I look forward to receiving your revised manuscript as soon as possible.
Kind regards,
Daniele Fabbri

The authors investigate the devolatilization of bituminous coal using TG-MS. Also the authors tried to clarified the kinetics and reaction mechanism of gaseous volatile evolution in the devolatilization procedure via Málek method. The research is of theoretical and practical significance for coal devolatilization. So I think it can be published in JAAP after addressing the following points:
1. There are some spelling errors in the manuscript, such as in the figure caption 8, 10 and 11, “experimental date ”should be “experimental data”.
2.The reason for selecting three kinds of coal should be provided, what is the difference among these three kinds of coal?
3.The highlights are lack of novelty, the first and the second points are just experiment in the manuscript.

The manuscript studies the devolatilization of bituminous coal by Thermogravimetry-Mass Spectrometry (TG-MS). It investigates the origin of the main gaseous products at the various stages of the process by monitoring their evolution profile. Furthermore, a novel method is applied for determining the kinetic function (release mechanism) and kinetic parameters for each one of the main evolved gases based on their MS profiles. TG-MS is an excellent choice for studying complex processes such as coal devolatilization because it enables the identification and profiling of individual evolved gases across time/temperature. The kinetic analysis conducted in the current work is detailed (refers to individual evolved gases) and gives a probable explanation of the complex coal pyrolysis mechanism. The authors present a thorough interpretation of the experimental data and they have adequately cross-checked their results against literature. The manuscript is well written and it can be published after minor revision mainly clarifications and minor corrections. My comments and suggestions for the revision are:

1)     Title: It would be more meaningful as: “TG-MS analysis and non-isothermal kinetics…”. A title that would more accurately reflect content should mention the work on the devolatilization characteristics, for example “Characterization and non-isothermal kinetics of bituminous coal devolatilization by TG-MS”.

2)     Introduction, paragraph 2, line 2: “…quantitative methods can be used to obtain TGA curve…” Please clarify what is meant by “quantitative methods” and “obtain”.

3)     Introduction, paragraph 2, line17: “..unambiguous choice..” is it possible that you  mean “ambiguous”?

4)     Please clarify what “I” stands for in equation 2. In the Nomenclature it is mentioned that “I” represents “intensity of gaseous product at various times”. What do you mean by intensity? Is it the area of the MS profile at various times? What is “A” in the units “A/mg”?

5)     Page 6, line3: “In addition, substituting the experimental data…..against α” . This sentence seems to be incomplete.

6)     Page 8, line 14: “…groups such as -O- and the gas phase.” Is seems that it should be “…groups such as -O- and the gas phase H2.”.

7)     Page 8, line 17: “…suggesting that water is somehow one of the gas evolved species”. Could you please clarify?

8)     Nomenclature: Igas-max is mentioned twice. Please substitute the second by Tgas-max and correct the units.
9) Fig.8 and Fig.10. "date" should be "data".

Editor:
Line numbering is mandatory, also in the revised version, please number the lines of your manuscript continuously throughout.

The manuscript is too long; some parts and figures should be moved into Supplementary Information; as a guideline, the typical length  of a research pdf manuscript for JAAP is 25-30 pages, double line spaced, including title page, cover letter, figures and tables.

Highlights: as recommended by our reveiwer, only the core results of the paper should be covered; please refer to the examples reported at www.elsevier.com/researchhighlights. (Include 3 to 5 highlights. There should be a maximum of 85 characters, including spaces, per highlight.

Where applicable please mark the changes made into the document with colored font; in alternative you can upload two versions, without and  with the Track Changes feature.

In the “Response to Reviewers” , please quote (“copy and paste”) the original reviewer’s comment before each answer.

Check that each illustration is submitted as a separate file (number the file in the “description”) and sized close to the desired dimensions of the printed version.
“amu” is not recommended (based on 16O ) and refers to relative atomic mass (“u” or “Da”) not mass to charge ratio (m/z).
