一竹子的启示(The Lesson of the Bamboo Trees)

竹子，在中国传统文化中，一直是清秀俊逸、高洁无华的象征。

小时候，一直觉得是竹子那高雅的姿态和纤秀的外表让苏东坡吟出“宁可食无肉，不可居无竹。无肉令人瘦，无竹令人俗。”这样的句子。直至慢慢长大，能静下心来细细观察竹子，才真正领会到：竹子的高雅并非在于它摇曳生姿的翠竿，而在于那“雪压不倒，风吹不折”（郑板桥语）的韧性，和那“能弯曲而不能折断”的尊严。

多年以后，看到这篇英文小品，让我再一次对竹子肃然起敬。让我们一起来体会竹子的生活态度：bend, but don't break!

One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to the chirps of birds and the rustling of leaves in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their original position after the wind had died down.

When I think about the bamboo tree's ability to bounce back or return to its original position, the word "resilience" comes to mind. When used in reference to a person this word means the ability to readily recover from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person's emotions.

Have you ever felt like you are about to snap? Have you ever felt like you are at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.

During the experience you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained, mentally exhausted and you most likely endured unpleasant physical symptoms.

Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don't break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.

A measure of hope will take you through the unpleasant ordeal. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant ordeal may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having.

If the going gets tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo tree, bend, but don't break!

二卖火柴的小女孩(The Little Match Girl)

In the winter of 1845, a poor little girl tried to sell matches in the streets for her family. It was a cold, cold evening. It was snowing and people in horse carriages and in the streets did not notice the little girl... - Not until the next morning, when she was lying quiet in the snow...

1845年的冬天（注：《卖火柴的小女孩》写于1845年），一个可怜的小女孩在大街上卖火柴，以此维持家里的生活。这是一个冰冷的下着雪的夜晚，那些乘着马车匆匆而过的人们并没有注意到这个小女孩……直到第二天早晨，她静静地躺在雪中……

据说有的家长不愿意让孩子看安徒生的童话，因为其中的不少故事太真实、太“残忍”。海的女儿是如此，卖火柴的小女孩更是如此。而安徒生却始终坚持自己，他的童话没有谆谆教导、没有居高临下、没有虚伪做作，他将真实的世界展现给我们，让我们学会坚定、宽容、博爱……

Once upon a time a little girl tried to make a living by selling matches in the street.

The snow-clad streets were deserted. From brightly lit windows came the tinkle of laughter and the sound of singing. But the poor little match seller sat sadly beside the fountain. Her ragged dress and worn shawl did not keep out the cold. She hadn't sold one box of matches all day and she was frightened to go home, for her father would certainly be angry.

The little girl's fingers were stiff with cold. If only she could light a match! But what would her father say at such a waste! Falteringly she took out a match and lit it. What a nice warm flame! The little match seller cupped her hand over it, and as she did so, she magically saw in its light a big brightly burning stove.

She held out her hands to the heat, but just then the match went out and the vision faded. The night seemed darker than before and it was getting colder.

After hesitating for a long time, she struck another match on the wall, and this time the glimmer turned the wall into a great sheet of crystal. Beyond that stood a fine table laden with food and lit by a candlestick. Holding out her arms towards the plates, the little match seller seemed to pass through the glass, but then the match went out and the magic faded.

She lit the third match and an even more wonderful thing happened. There stood a Christmas tree hung with hundreds of candles, glittering with tinsel and colored balls. "Oh, how lovely!" exclaimed the little match seller, holding up the match. Then, the match burned her finger and flickered out.

Scarcely aware of what she was doing, the little match seller lit another match. This time, she saw her grandmother. "Granny, stay with me!" she pleaded, as she lit one match after the other, so that her grandmother would not disappear like all the other visions.

However, Granny did not vanish, but gazed smilingly at her. Then she opened her arms and the little girl hugged her crying: "Granny, take me away with you!"

A cold day dawned and a pale sun shone on the fountain and the icy road. Close by lay the lifeless body of a little girl surrounded by spent matches. "Poor little thing!" exclaimed the passersby. "She was trying to keep warm!"

But by that time, the little match seller was far away, where there is neither cold, nor hunger, nor pain.

三彩虹的起源(The Origin of the Rainbow)
Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel. All claimed that they were the best.

有一天，世界上的五颜六色彼此争吵了起来，每一个颜色都声称自己是最好的。

Green said: "Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority."

绿色说：“很明显嘛！我就是最重要的。我是生命和希望的象征。青草、大树和叶子都选择我，只要往乡野望去，我就是主色。”

Blue interrupted: "You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would all be nothing."

蓝色打断他的话说：“你只想到地面，想想天空和海洋吧！水是生命之源，而天空包容大地、宁静和祥和。一旦失去我的宁静祥和，你们就什么也不是了。”

Yellow chuckled: " The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun."

黄色暗自好笑：“太阳是黄色的，月亮是黄色的，星星也是黄色的。每当你看着向日葵，整个世界也跟着笑逐言开起来。没有了我，也就没有了乐趣。”

Orange started next: "I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, oranges and mangoes. When I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you."

橙色接着说：“我是最重要的维他命，想想胡萝卜、橘子和芒果。每当日出日落时，我就满布在天空，我的美丽如此令人惊艳，根本不会有人想到你们。”

Red could stand it no longer so he shouted out: "I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood一 life's blood! I bring fire into the blood. I am the color of passion and love."

红色再也按捺不住，他大声的说：“我是你们的主宰，我是血！生命之血！我将热情注入血液，我是热情和爱情的颜色。”

Purple was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs and bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey."

紫色自视甚高，而且盛气凌人的说：“我是皇室和权威的颜色，国王、领袖和大主教都选择我，因为我是权威和智慧的象征。人们不敢对我有所存疑，只有乖乖听命的份。”

Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace."

靛色终于说话了，比起其它颜色，他的声音平和多了，但是，也是同样的斩钉截铁：“我是宁静之声，我代表思想、深思熟虑、曙光以及深水。你们需要我来平衡对比、祈祷并获得内在的平静。”

And so the colors went on quarreling, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening, and thunder rolled. Rain started to pour down.

五言六色就这样一直吵下去，每个颜色都认为自己最优秀。突然间闪电雷鸣大作，大雨倾盆而下。

Rain began to speak: "You foolish colors. Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose? Join hands with one another and come to me."

雨开口说话：“你们这些蠢颜色，你们不晓得自己各有所司吗？大家手牵手一起过来。”

Doing as they were told, the colors joined hands and united.

那些颜色都乖乖的手牵手，站在一起。

Rain continued: "From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow."

雨接着说：“从今以后，只要一下雨，你们每个都得伸展成大弓形横跨在天际，藉以提醒大家和平共处。因为彩虹是明日希望的象征。”
