the 48th IFF Spring School

the 48th IFF Spring School entitled: Topological Matter – Topological Insulators, Skyrmions and Majoranas which will take place in German Jülich March 27 – April 7, 2017. The annual IFF Spring Schools has a long tradition . It were first brought into being in 1970 by the “Institut für Festkörperforschung” (IFF) founded in 1969, now named Peter Grünberg Institute in honour of our colleague Peter Grünberg, who received the Noble Prize in Physics 2007 together with Albert Fert, for the discovery of the GMR effect and the development of Spintronics. Since then, they have made it possible for students and young scientists to gain a two-week insight into a current topic related to condensed matter physics. The IFF Spring School 2017 will provide a comprehensive introduction to the physics of topological matter — one of the very active and timely field of condensed matter. The program contains elementary lectures providing a solid foundation of theoretical concepts and phenomenology related to topology as well as experimental observations of the consequences of topological concepts in momentum and in real space. An overview will be given of our current understanding from the discovery of novel topological matter to device concepts and potential applications. The participants of the IFF Spring School are expected to have a basic knowledge of condensed matter or material science. The school is a service to the community, it relatively inexpensive and aims at educating PhD students and postdocs in this rather new field of topology .
