For Ph.D. student, full stipend ~$25K (varying by departments/programs) is provided as either research assistant or teaching assistant, plus full tuition coverage.

6.导师(课题组)介绍
Prof. Chen got her PhD degree in Biophysics from UC Berkeley and postdoctoral training in Theoretical Cellular Physics at NIH. She has published theoretical and computational models for various biological systems in high-profile journals, such as Nature Communications, PNAS and Biophysical Journal.

Prof. Chen’s group builds mathematical and computational models to study cellular processes. We emphasize on how spatial, temporal and mechanical regulations couple with biochemical signals to control cellular functions. Biological systems self-assemble into highly heterogeneous and dynamic structures. Spatiotemporal regulation and mechanical interactions constitute integrated components of biological signaling mechanisms, but in most cases their specific functional roles are not well understood yet. Modern experimental tools allow high resolution live-cell imaging and dynamic force measurement; however, it remains difficult or impossible to simultaneously track all biomolecules and their activities in the complex biological systems. To fill the unavoidable void, we weave experimental data into physically viable models, which provides insights into functional roles of spatiotemporal regulation and mechanical interactions. We typically work in close collaboration with experimental groups to ensure effective feedback between theory and experiments.

We especially prefer background in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, soft condensed matter physics, statistical mechanics, engineering physics, etc., plus passion for understanding biological systems.

8. 申请方法与条件
For Ph.D. program:

     Required:
     Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering
     GRE and TOEFL scores

     Preferred:
     Background in physics/math modeling with a strong interest in biology.
     211, 985 Universities and institutes.
     GPA > 3.5
     Master’s degree
     First-author publications

     You are strongly encouraged to apply through the interdisciplinary graduate program Genetics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (GBCB). You may also apply through related departments, such as Biological Sciences. Stipend level may vary between programs or departments (GBCB ~$26.5K annual). IMPORTANT: In your application please indicate that you would like to join Prof. Chen’s Group.

For postdoc:
     We especially prefer PhD in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, soft condensed matter physics, statistical mechanics, engineering physics, etc., plus passion for understanding biological systems. Please send your CV with publication list, and research statement to chenjing@vt.edu.
