RUTHENIUM Ruthenium exhibits eight oxidation states in its compound, but the +2, +3, +4 states are the most common. Ruthenium reacts with oxygen at 500oC to produce ruthenium dioxide, RuO2. This black oxide is insoluble in water and acids. Ahydrous form of ruthenium dioxide is precipitated from a boiling alkaline solution of ruthenium tetroxide by the addition of alcohol. This form is soluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Volatile ruthenium tetroxide, RuO4, is formed when an acidic ruthenium solution is treated with a strong oxidant such as chlorine or bromine. This oxide is highly toxic. The distillation of ruthenium tetroxide is a very important separative step in many nanlytical procedures. The tetroxide is moderately water-soluble. It dissolves in solutions of alkalis and forms a green solution of perruthenate, RuO4-, initially and then an orange solution of ruthenate RuO42-. Perruthenates and ruthenates can also be prepared by fusing the finely divided metal with a mixture of alkali peroxide and hydroxide.
