Figure 1 illustrates the possible chemical reaction in the chemical modification process for ACST. According to the structural feature of ACST, the treatment with NaOH can not only increase the amount of hydroxyl groups in the absorbent, it also causes the absorbent to swell, which increases the porosity and the specific surface area. The purpose of the addition of mercaptoacetic acid is to introduce a large amount of sulfydryl groups. The sulfydryl groups can readily form Cu-S coordination complex, which forms an open network of functional groups on the surface of the absorbent. The addition of sodium sulfide transforms the open network to a closed network, which leads to the formation of many sulfur (element) on the surface of the absorbent. Sulfur has a strong affinity to heavy metal ions, it is also the main reaction center on the surface of the absorbent. |
