为防止盗版等问题以确保自己的权益，作者罗琳仅授权英国、美国、加拿大、澳大利亚和南非的五家出版商出版其英文版，但由于运输路径、成本等原因，国内主要引进的是英国版和美国版。在英国，版本还细分为儿童版和成人版，两者的主要区别仅是封面不同；在美国则只有一个版本。那么，美国版与英国版有什么区别呢？美国版编辑解释说，主要是因为美国英语与英国英语的细微差别所致，比如，英国用“jumper”表示套头衫，而美国认为这是跳高运动员的意思，所以，在美国版中就改用了“sweater”一词，美国版书中主要是做了类似这样的改动。
