Scientia PhD Scholarship Opportunity at the University of New South Wales UNSW, Canberra, Australia for 2017 What is Scientia PhD: The Scholarship Scheme, established as a cornerstone of the UNSW 2025 Strategy, is a distinctive scheme that will attract up to 700 new PhD scholars of exceptional quality over the next ten years. Scientia scholars will have a strong commitment to making a difference in the world with demonstrated potential for contributing to the social engagement and/or global impact pillars of the 2025 Strategy. Award Details: Awardees will receive a 40,000 AUD per annum stipend plus a travel and development support package of up to 10,000 AUD per annum. International students will receive a tuition fee scholarship. Detailed guidelines for the Scholarship can be found at https://research.unsw.edu.au/unsw-scientia-phd-scholarship-scheme. This scholarship opportunity is at UNSW Canberra. Applications Deadline: November 11, 2016. Project Title: Development of Optimization Methods to Address the Challenges in Novel Material Design Project Details: In this era, our success is largely determined by our ability to design, characterize and synthesize custom materials. Materials which can withstand extreme temperatures, stress, radiation, and corrosion to the ones which can self-regulate porosity, strength, conductivity and elastic properties are regularly sought for a range of practical applications. This project aims to develop optimization methods to deal with the challenges of such large scale optimization problems involving multiple, highly nonlinear objectives and constraints defined using a combination of continues, discrete, categorical and permutation variables. This would bridge the gap between existing technology and its adoption for custom material design. Research will be undertaken within the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Group. About the Group: The Multidisciplinary Design Optimization lab is located in the School of Engineering and Information Technology, University of New South Wales Australia. It was established in 2005 with a vision to make significant contributions towards global research in the area of multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO). The aim is to develop cutting-edge, practical and efficient algorithms and frameworks to support multidisciplinary optimization, especially for computationally expensive problems. Such technologies are vital for industries to remain competitive. Further details on the research activities of the group can be found at www.mdolab.net. You should have First Class Honors or equivalent in computer science, materials science, computational chemistry or engineering Interest in the development of optimization algorithms with a flair for innovation Strong mathematical and programming skills Good communication skills Ability to work in a group and strive for research excellence. Please contact Associate Professor Tapabrata Ray to discuss about the scholarship opportunity for this research topic. If this is of your interest, please send (a) detailed CV, (b) copy of all academic transcripts and (c) copies of all publications to t.ray@adfa.edu.au |
