[交流] PhD positions in Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology

The Center of Multi-Dimensional Carbon Materials of Institute of Basic Science (IBS-CMCM), located in Ulsan
National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) of Korea, is launching a theory research group led by Prof. Feng
Ding (see https://www.researcherid.com/rid/D-5938-2011 for more information). The theory group now has 5-6 PhD
student openings in the following study topics:
i. Multi-scale computational methods development for materials science, including global minimum and/or
transition state searching, classical and semi-empirical potential energy surfaces, kinetic Monte Carlo algorithms,
Phase Field Theory, etc.
ii. Application of machine learning in materials science, including the development of artificial neural network
(ANN) potential and material prediction by machine leaning, etc.
iii. The mechanism nanomaterials’ synthesis at atomic level, including (i) the formation mechanism of fullerenes
from vapor phases; (ii) the mechanisms of carbon nanotube (CNT) growth and the potential routes towards
chirality selection during CNTs synthesis; (iii) the mechanism of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of
graphene and other 2D materials; (iv) the mechanism of diamond CVD growth, etc.
iv. The structural defects, mechanical, thermal, electronic properties of CNTs, graphene and 2D materials.
v. The computational study of surface science and chemical reactions in solution.
The PhD positions are open to those who are holding or will be awarded a Bachelor or Master Degree in Physics,
Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, etc. All tuition fees will be waived for successful applicants, and
sufficient allowances for living and study in UNIST will be provided.
Applicants please enclose the following materials to the email: fding@ibs.re.kr for our consideration:
(1) An updated CV that addresses the following information:
• Education background.
• Research experiences and publications, if applicable.
(2) A statement that addresses the following information:
• Motivation of PhD study.
• Interested research topics and your experience and advantages of carrying one of the research topics, if
applicable.
(3) Other information that should be provided includes:
• A copy of official transcript.
• Research topics you ever carried out and the main results achieved.
• A list of publications and 1-3 representative publications, if applicable
• Additional information that may support your application.
Additional information:
After interview, applicants should submit all the required materials by UNIST via https://admg.
intl.unist.ac.kr/admissions/guidelines/ from 18, October, 2016 to 11, November, 2016 for Spring entrance and from 18,
