实在不清楚这位外导要我做什么，求助。

Dr. Mr. xxx, thanks for your interest in doing a PhD with me at xxx University! Your track record sounds very impressive, and as far as I can tell from the material you sent me, you are well prepared to pursue a PhD in Germany. I am not quite sure yet whether the topic you are interested in is actually a topic in xxx, or rather a topic concerning the xxx, in particular. If the latter, another colleague at our Department may be better suited to supervise you, since my own work is in political theory (including democratic theory). It is, of course, very difficult to assess your case more accurately without knowing each other and being able to talk in person. So any arrangement we would make before you arrive in Germany would be only preliminary — you would have to see for yourself what best suits your interests once you have arrived and adjusted to our academic system. If you do want to come to Germany for a PhD, there are several things you would have to make sure: + First of all, you would have to find out whether your graduate degree is recognized as qualifying you for a PhD in Germany. This is usually done through an online application at the International Office of the respective university where you wish to study. For xxx, you can look up how the procedure works at www.studying.international-applicants. Each university can decide this by itself, although there are recommendations from a federal agency which are usually followed. I don’t know whether for China in general, or for your own university, there is a general recommendation to recognize the degrees — you would have to find out for yourself. + The thesis can be written in English; we also always have some classes in English, and getting around the university with English is no problem at all. But you would have to acquire a working language of German to get around in daily life. + And you will of course have to secure funding, since with a student visa you’re allowed to work only on a limited scale, and Departments do not offer jobs to most of their PhD students. You can find more on the question of finances, and on other questions you may have, on the website indicated above. But you should also be able to get general information from the cultural section of the German embassy or consulate, or from a Goethe-Institut (embassy or Goethe-Institut should have representatives of the DAAD: the German Academic Exchange Service, who should be able to give you information on how to come to Germany for a PhD). I am not quite sure yet whether the topic you are interested in is actually a topic in xxx, or rather a topic concerning the xxx, in particular.（他没有搞明白你对两个领域，那个更感兴趣） If the latter, another colleague at our Department may be better suited to supervise you, since my own work is in political theory (including democratic theory).（后者是实践性？他的工作是政治理论，包括民主理论）。 另外，他建议你除了英语用于工作环境，最好学习生活用的语言（德语）。另外在欧洲PHD一般都是Job机会，他首先让你确定你的学历是德国认可的，since with a student visa you’re allowed to work only on a limited scale, and Departments do not offer jobs to most of their PhD students. (学生被允许工作的范围有限，而且学院没有足够的工作机会给PHD学生)。这需要你的奖学金足够。 |
