PhD Position in urban metabolism and urban sustainability

SDU Life Cycle Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in urban metabolism and urban sustainability. We expect the position to be filled from November 1st, 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

SDU Life Cycle Engineering
SDU Life Cycle Engineering is a self-governed Centre within the Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark. The Centre is acknowledged for unique research in system analysis and systems integration, applying a holistic understanding and global view on the sustainable development, optimization and integration of key sectors such as agriculture, energy, industry and waste management under present and future framework conditions. The theory and methods of Life Cycle Assessment, Energy System Analysis, and Material Flow Analysis as well as economic and socio-economic assessment lie at the core of our research.

Our research field was established at SDU in 2007. Since then, we have been steadily growing, and by 2016 we have achieved status as self-governed Centre, counting 15 researchers from 8 countries and about to expand again by opening 7-9 positions. We are predominantly externally funded and engaged in a large number of strategic research projects funded by a variety of sources from EU projects, national strategic research projects, sector research projects (e.g. the Danish EPA and Energy Agency) to private company projects and NGO projects. In our research, we collaborate with leading universities, centres and companies in Denmark, EU, USA, and Asia with project partners counting around 200 industrial partners, 100 university partners, and 40 authority and NGO partners since the establishment of our research group in 2007.

Our education & teaching portfolio covers a broad range of technology and science courses related to these research areas. We are running our university’s Master program in Environmental Engineering and are strongly involved in both the Bachelor and Master programs on Energy Technology and on Integrated Design and Sustainable Product Development.

The PhD Position
The PhD position is a core part of the project “The weight of cities and dematerialization and decarbonization implications (CityWeight)” recently funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research.

Cities present both the problems and solutions to sustainability challenges. Urbanization is largely a process of the development of urban built environment stocks, which facilitate access to human needs and consequently lead to environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle (built-up, operation, retrofitting, and waste management phases). Urban metabolism research has hitherto been focusing on characterizing urban flows; however, urban stocks and their implications on the trade-offs and synergies between direct and indirect environmental impacts mitigation remain poorly understood. In this project, we propose to develop a method to characterize the physical weight, material composition, spatial distribution, and historical dynamics of built environment stocks for case Danish cities (e.g., Odense). The results will help inform sustainable waste management, urban planning, dematerialization, and decarbonization strategies.

The PhD fellow is expected to:
• Successfully complete a study programme corresponding to 30 ECTS
• Participate in teaching and dissemination activities corresponding to approx. one semester of full time employment
• Carry out an external research stay
• Complete a PhD thesis including scientific peer-reviewed articles
• Defend his PhD work in a public PhD defence

Qualifications and skills
The successful candidate should have a M.Sc. degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Ecology, Geography, or closely related disciplines. Knowledge and/or experience with Material Flow Analysis and/or Geographical Information System (GIS) are preferable. Experience in modelling and/or quantitative analysis is an advantage.

The applicant should have good communication skills. He or She must either have English as her/his native language, or alternatively be able to demonstrate an English language the level demanded by the University of Southern Denmark, Faculty of Engineering (minimum scores: IELTS 6.5 points; Paper-based TOEFL 575 points; Computer based TOEFL 230, Internet-based TOEFL 88 points).

The ideal candidate should be ambitious, well-motivated, and hardworking. He or She should be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary and international academic environment, and should be able to work both independently and in a team. At SDU Life Cycle Engineering we are front runners in the main part of our research areas, and accordingly, the candidate is expected to have ability of being creative, and to be able to work under challenged conditions where the road ahead is not clear, and on the borderline of our knowledge.
