Tensile properties

Base metals and welded joints in the Al-4Zn-1Mg alloys were subjected to tensile testing after T6 heat treatment. In each condition, five specimens were tested and a range of tensile strength value had been presented in Table1. Table 1 summarizes the tensile test results. It is worth noting that the tensile strengths of original parent metals and MIG joints for T6 condition are 374~384 MPa and 315~320 MPa, respectively. This indicates that there is about 15.8% reduction in strength values 1398 Materials Processing Technology, ICAMMP2011 due to MIG welding. The elongation of original parent metals and MIG joints for T6 condition are 9.9~10.5% and 4.8~5.2%, respectively. This suggests that there is a significant loss of ductility in the joint. These low ductilities can be attributed to strain concentration in the lower strength fusion zone resulting from the loss of strength. However, the joint efficiency of MIG joints in the Al-4Zn-1Mg alloy was found to be reasonably high, i.e. 83.3~84.2%, the metal inert gas welding technique is found to improve the joint efficiency irrespective of the welding processes |
