[交流] 2 Fully-funded PhD studentship - Brunel University London, Prof. I. Chang

Brunel University London | Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology | London | United Kingdom

Prof. I. Chang

1. PhD studentship in formation of intermetallics in aluminium alloys

Project Description

Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship in experimental investigation of the formation of iron-containing intermetallics in recycled aluminium alloys in BCAST at Brunel University London. The studentship is open to both UK and international candidates. Applicants who are non-native English speakers must possess an English language qualification accepted by the Home Office. The details can be found at https://www.brunel.ac.uk/international/languagerequirements

BCAST is a speciality research institute focusing on solidification related research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering (the Future LiME Research Hub). Our research covers fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and materials processing. BCAST is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See https://bcast.brunel.ac.uk for more information.

The successful candidate will work on experimental investigation of the formation of iron-containing intermetallics in recycled aluminium alloys. The project aims to understand heterogeneous nucleation Fe-containing intermetallics during solidification of recycled Al alloys and to develop practical approaches to refine such intermetallics. This project involves alloy preparation, solidification processing under various condition and materials characterisation at different length scales. The PhD student will be supported by a number of research fellows working in the related areas.

2. PhD studentship on development of die cast (DC) aluminium alloys

Project Description

Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship in aluminium alloy development in BCAST at Brunel University London. The studentship is opened to UK and international candidates. Applicants who are non-native English speakers must possess an English language qualification accepted by the Home Office. The successful candidate will work on the development of die cast (DC) Al alloys that exhibit high strength and large ductility. The project is concerned with designing multicomponent eutectic Al alloys with preferable solidified microstructures, using a combination of thermodynamic calculations, advanced casting processes and materials characterisation techniques. The aim is to understand the relationships between processing, alloy chemistry, microstructure and properties of newly developed Al alloys suitable for automotive and aerospace applications.

Eligibility

The successful candidates should hold or expect to obtain a first class or upper second-class honour degree or equivalent in suitable engineering discipline, e.g. materials science, chemistry, physics, etc. A Masters level qualification is desirable but not essential. Experience in solidification processing of metallic materials, skills in microstructural characterisation using various microscopy techniques and a working knowledge of mechanical testing of metallic materials is an advantage. In addition, he/she should be highly motivated, able to work in a team and have good communication skills.

Informal enquiries should be direct to Prof. I.T. Chang (email: isaac.chang@brunel.ac.uk Tel:+44-1895-268-491).

How to Apply

If you wish to apply, please email the following to Isaac.chang@brunel.ac.uk by 8th August 2016.

•        An up-to-date CV;
•        A single-page (A4), single-spaced personal statement setting out why you are interested in undertaking this project;
