Dear colleagues, Please consider submitting an abstract to our session at the AGU 2016 Fall Meeting. Abstracts are due 3 August, 11:59 P.M. EDT https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2016/abstract-submissions/ Session Title: Coupling N Cycle and Soil Carbon Dynamics: Understanding the Nexus Between Land Management and Greenhouse Gases (Nitrous Oxide, Methane) Emission and Mitigation Potential Session ID#: 213909 Confirmed Keynote Speakers: Rattan Lal; Rod Venterea Session Description: Soils supports all terrestrial life by provision and moderation of ecosystem functions and food and fiber production. Soils are also being recognized as a sink and source of greenhouse gases (GHGs). In recent years, soil organic carbon maintenance and sequestration through amendments, e.g. cover crop, manure, compost and biochar, have been used to increase soil productivity and general soil health. However, the complex interactions between these organic amendments and N cycling processes such as immobilization, mineralization, ammonia oxidation and denitrification, and the contribution of these interactions to GHGs production and consumption are not well understood but are needed to guide land management with the goal of mitigating GHG emissions and increasing soil productivity and sustainability. This session encourages studies on the drivers, mechanisms and significance of different N cycling processes as affected by soil organic carbon management, as well as the strategies to maximum the benefits of organic amendment application.
