One PhD scholarship is available in the School of Science (Computer Science and Information Technology) at RMIT University, Melbourne, VIC 3000, Australia. It is valued at AU$25,406 per annum for 3~3.5 years plus a tuition waiver. This position is funded for the following project: Project: Data-driven Optimization for Long-term Cloud Service Composition (Supervisors: Dr. Kai Qin and Prof. Athman Bouguettaya (IEEE Fellow)) Data-driven optimization searches for optimal solutions under the guidance of useful information learnt from historical search experiences using machine learning techniques. Search experiences in one problem can be used to facilitate solving other problems via knowledge transfer. This project aims to develop effective and efficient data-driven optimization techniques for the selection and composition of cloud services under a long-term economic model-based framework. It will assist IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) consumers in optimizing their selection of IaaS providers to minimize their long-term costs while meeting their QoS (Quality of Service) expectations, and also assist IaaS providers in optimizing their selection of IaaS requests to maximize their long-term revenue while meeting their consumers' QoS expectations. The outcomes of this project will lead to an economically viable cloud market facilitating cloud providers to maximize their long-term revenue while aiding cloud consumers to minimize their long-term costs. Candidates must have a strong interest in one or more of the following areas: optimisation, evolutionary computation, machine learning, and cloud computing.
