As an alternative to Pt deposition, WC whose electron density of states near to its Fermi level resembles to that of Pt can be electronically coupled to WO3 for photoactive performance. In addition, WC has strong resistance against catalytic poisoning with specific oxygen adsorption and suitable work function (5.0 eV). The electron transferring from CB of WO3 to WC initi-ates multielectron oxygen reduction, because the Fermi level of WC is situated between standard reduction potential of two electron oxygen reduction and CB edge of WO3. The WO3–SiC–TiO2 with enriched hydroxyl groups on the surface was favourable towards the mineralization of MEK without the formation of any toxic by-products under UV light. The WO3 promotes the desorption of intermediates formed during the course of degradation and prevents the composite from deactivation. The CB and VB of SiC lies above the energy levels of TiO2 and therefore charge transfer takes place accordingly resulting in increased carrier life time. |
