Life Is Short, but Love Is Long

“I have changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my daddy back on Christmas.” A girl wrote these in a letter to commemorate her father, a schoolteacher, knifed to death outside their school gate. She also described her feelings as that she could not see the stars in the sky without her father. This story may shock those much with the same experience.

When those we loved depart from us, we can also no longer see the stars for a while, but you will find them remain there, as the time passing by and our mist of tears going away. Sometimes, on a beautiful and starry night, when looking into the spacious sky closely and attentively, you can hear the voices of them in your heart and see they are smiling towards you.

It makes me pause and think, this whole story, about how I will live on in hearts and minds of those I cared and loved.

Life, merely a short span on Earth, is of highest significance, but in some instances, so vulnerable and fugacious. The irresistible death may befall on us all, and sometimes so suddenly. But, I believe, for sure, that our love can be not a passion sentiment, but the greatest reality in the universe and those whom we love will always be there with us, even if we can no longer see their physical forms, nor hear their kind voice.

We do not disappear when our bodies go, we still live on, and I’m sure, in the lives of the loved. Maybe, the acceptance of the inevitability of the death, can give dignity to our life, and the understanding of our inescapable role in the attachment with those who love us and we loved, might behoove us to have more care for what it is of us they will remember.

True love, the genuine sensation, marked with tenderness, protectiveness, tolerance, and spiritual joy transcends over time, distance, and all obstacles faced. The bonds that exist between the two are stronger than anything else. Our life can be a gorgeous spark in eternity, if permeated with the sincere and pure emotions.

There is a story upon this. The two, John and Mary, met each other many years prior to their marriage, and got married eventually, despite of the long-time departure when they began their different careers. With the mutual company and encouragement, they built a brilliant partnership and met the ups and downs in their life. Things went smoothly, and the reliable financial security, the birth of their first child, as well as the splendid achievements in their work, made this family a charming one in their neighborhood. They lived in great happiness and looked forward more to the future.

But unfortunately, as people phased it, the chilly winds of misfortune began to blow over this family. After a routine examine, the diagnosis informed them, that Mary got the cancer, which was incurable. Mary’s battle with the overwhelming pain and struggle for life was so hard, but she failed to prevail at last, and went away on one winter’s day.

It was a sheer bolt from the blue to the whole family, and they had no idea how they would continue in the rest of life without their dearest Mary. So many brilliant impressions about his sweet rushed into John’s mind, and their first meet remained vivid there without fading: Mary is coming, lovely and beautiful; budding with the childish happiness, the face blushed with rosy health, the lips with the freshest of smiles, and a pair of eyes sparking with the brightest glow.

But now, her innocence went away like petals blew down on grass, the flowers on her grave stiff in frost, and the leaves tumbling, flying widely in the air, reburying her.

It took them a while to get used to this disaster, and John perceived that the life became merely a meaningless mess. One night, after a long day stretching like a dreadful eternity, John sat down, and he tried to relax but couldn’t calm down. He put up a book, only to find the words were the blur. His thought run races between the sublime and the ridiculous, and he became delirious with dreaming. He closed his eyes.

Suddenly, the bell rang sharply across the silence. He shuffled down the hall and opened the door, and beyond his widest dreams, he found his candy was there, outside the door! She was the same soft, quiet as blossoms falling, gentle with her usual kind smile.

“Mary?” He shouted out the name that twisted over his mind such a long time. John struggled from his dream, only to see nothing there. He rushed out of the door, and was in vain again. “What’s there?” He found a card at the door, with “1111” and the letter “M” on it. “Oh, my God!”, He cried out, as the “M” was the first letter of Mary’s name, and the “1111” stood for the day she left. Just at the moment, a quiet and soft voice echoed in his heart, “I am right here with you, darling.” Calmness and joy welled up within him, and he burst into tears. Standing there in silence, tears sliding down his checks, he felt again the love that missed for the past months.
Many other similar things followed, seeming to come at the time when he needed most the reassurance about life and directions for it, and he discovered a strange but warming way in such reminders.

At the succeeding months, John strived to live as gloriously and fully, and he has rebuilt himself, both physically and psychologically. Happiness and laugh came back again in this family.

Maybe, his comment upon all of these says something, “Dear Mary, I have always loved you, and will love you through the hallways of the time into the field of the Eternity.” In his dreams, and I am sure, with Mary in his arms, they soar through the moonlight, and the pair shoot like the comets into ever.

There is a notion that our loved ones are always with us, and they continue their life in an area, closer than we think, beyond our physical senses. They offer their help and comfort in a way we can feel. Another story indicates this comprehensively.

Kate, an old woman living in the nursing home, and her husband, Carl, left not so long ago, as the cute heart attack. They two were the admirable couple there, and they were always seen together, in the dining room, strolling around the lawn, hand in hand. At times, with their big scrapbooks on their laps, they reminisced over the photos, and the sunshine shined over their white heads, and their wrinkled faces. They smiled at the memories of the years, caught and hold in the album.

Kate was feeble, and had to take medicine on time. Under the watchful eyes of Carl, she took the pills. Carefully and cautiously, the man would help her from the chair to her bed, and tacked the covers in around her frail body. Then, he bent down, and kissed his lover goodnight, tenderly and gently.

At the first weeks of his death, she seemed so restless, and so insecure. Sitting in the chair, motionless, hands on her lap, she gazed sadly at the photos of their happy times before. Every time, when hearing the “Carl”, her eyes came back to the life, with recognition and sadness flooding on her face. Bedtime was the worst. She remained silent and sadly withdrawn, despite of the staff’s considerate care. On one night, when the nurse came into her room, she saw a paper, on Mary’s lap, filled with the word “KISS”, and at then, the nurse realized that what Mary needed badly was the usual goodnight kiss, done by her sweet Carl ever before. She bent down, and kissed her wrinkled face. With emotional floodgate opened, Mary cried, and murmured, ”I miss him so much. All those years, he kissed me goodnight. I am just can’t fall sleep without his kiss”. Tears run down her face, and she sang the usual song, in a soft and low voice, but as melodious as before.

Life is so short, but the sincere love will never disappear. We are grateful to meet the right one that will accompany with us for the rest of our life. To the world, you are just one person, but to the one, we might be the whole world!

We will have an intuitive knowledge that our attitudes towards life and our genuine love are of critical importance to our happiness and enjoyment, and this amounts to the recognition that our life would be meaningless and monotonous without the decoration of love, mingled with other feelings.

Someone acclaims that the true happiness has nothing to do with those we strive for, but the things we deserve and preside over. This is true, and the awareness of the fugacity and the irresistible death might transmute our enthusiasm over the illusion into the reality and the cherishing of what we own, which ennobles our life intrinsically.

What we owe to love is not the passing satisfactory, of which is not the real wonder of it, what we owe is power, that is the needed courage and support for the flowering of our life, as well as the persistence to overcome all the obstacles on the road to success, and every emotional influx is a step upwards, ascending from the earth to the mysterious altitudes above.
At last, I recommend a love song, saying like this: “So kiss me, my sweet, / and so let us apart. / And when I am too old to dream, / that kiss will live in my heart forever! ”
