The typical FESEM images of Tm3+ (figures 5(a) and (b)), Tb3+ (figures 5(c) and (d)) and (figures 5(e) and (f)) Eu3+:Y2O3 are shown in figures 5(a)–(f). Figures 5(a), (c), and (e) show the low magnification images and figures 5(b), (d), and (f) show the high magnification images of nanotubes, indicating the presence of tubular morphology after calcination. These results suggested that when the rare earth ion doped Y(OH)3 nanotubes were calcined at 500 ◦C in air for 4 h, rare earth ion doped Y2O3 nanotubes were obtained. The diameter of Tm3+, Tb3+, and Eu3+:Y2O3 nanotubes are about 80–120 nm (outer diameter), 50–100 nm (inner diameter), and length about 1–5 μm. Figure S4 (available at stacks.iop.org/Nano/20/305302) shows the few nanotubes with ruptured tubular morphology after calcination at 800 ◦C for 4 h, indicating that the tubular morphology can be retained even..after calcinations at 800 ◦C.
