Environmental Degradation in Industrial Composites provides vital information on the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, liquid and gas exposure, electrical fields and radiations, and how micro- and micromechanical calculations during design and manufacture must take these effects into account.

The book concludes with reviews on standard and specific testing methods for the various environmental factors and their combinations, helping mechanical/materials engineers and specifiers to predict possible changes due to environmental conditions.

Summary: Very Helpful for non specialists

We are not composite specialist, but are considering integrating a simple composite structure into a new product. This book showed us that the material we were considering was likely to fail long term stress tests, but identified several other choices that look like they should work in our environment. Further more, several useful tests to rate the longevity of our product (which is important for our application) were also found. There was even a case study using one of our competitor's products (High voltgage over-current protection)!

A half hour with this book saved us several months of wasted effort (assuming we had gone forward with our original material selection). You may still need to consult a composite specialist in the end (the material suppliers are quite helpful if asked the right questions) but this book is well worth the cost in terms of knowledge gained and time saved.

We are going forward with the concept using the new materials feeling much more informed and confident.
