We receive a large number of papers on neuroimaging correlates of various disorders and, as a result, the threshold for acceptance is particularly high. Whilst the differences between the cases and controls are interesting it is difficult to attribute them to an effect of XXX as opposed to XXX itself. Overall the conceptual advance over the existing literature is insufficient to prioritise the manuscript for formal peer review.

This disappointing decision does not reflect criticism of the scientific quality of the work; rather, it is based on our perception of the novelty and potential impact of your manuscript in the context of other published work, and on the competition for space in the journal amongst the range of topics on which we publish.

In order to allow you to submit the work to a more suitable journal as soon as possible, no further processing of the manuscript will take place.
