There is an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research fellow position with Dr Ben Xu in the Smart Materials and Surfaces Laboratory (SMSL) within the Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering; Faculty of Engineering and Environment at Northumbria University. The SMSL is a leading research lab with a breadth of activity from in-lab science to applicable technology, and consisting six permanent staff working in related academic fields from a range of disciplines and supported by a multidisciplinary mix of postdoctoral research fellows and research students. The lab has achieved a strong research profile with publications in world leading journals, and attracting funds from Research Council and industrial collaborative projects.

This Research Fellow position is part of a project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The project aim is to research and develop a microfluidic switch by producing controllable surface buckling instabilities on polymer gel. The successful applicant will join the SMSL, working on the responsive polymer based micro-fluidic system. The research will involve i) Design and fabrication of the responsive gel based system, ii) Electro-buckling gel layer on micro-engineered substrate and mechanics study, iii) Micro-fluidic system assembly, flow instrumentation and imaging, and iv) developing theoretical understanding on the certain scientific/technological topic(s). This position would suit a highly motivated researcher, interested in crossing discipline boundaries between materials sciences, engineering and physics.
The applicant should have significant research experience and a track record of high impact journal publication, and related research experiences from the least two fields of the following: responsive gel materials, chemical/physical manipulated surface instabilities, micro-engineering and micro-fluidic system. The successful applicant should possess a PhD degree in engineering, materials, experimental physics or a related discipline before starting the post, or/and have relevant postdoctoral experience (desired).
