Dear Researcher

A new scholarship opportunity exists for PhD candidates in south western Sydney. Please forward details to any potential candidates who may be interested.
South Western Sydney Local Health District, UNSW and Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research PhD Scholarship: Use of a Decision Aid in Ulcerative Colitis: Enhancing Patients’ Empowerment, Quality of Life and Disease Control.

Scholarship Description

The scholarship is for the PhD project: “Use of A Decision Aid in Ulcerative Colitis: Enhancing Patients’ Empowerment, Quality of Life and Disease Control”, funded through South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD). The value of the scholarship is AU$35000 per annum for 3 years plus travel expenses required for implementation of the project and additional financial support enabling the candidate to attend one annual Australian Gastroenterology scientific meeting during the course of their study.

Project Description

At least 77000 Australians are affected by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract, which includes both Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). The vast majority of IBD patients want Shared Decision Making (SDM) as the model for IBD care. Decision aids support and promote SDM. The first decision aid worldwide for use in UC has been developed by the IBD Research Group at Liverpool Hospital in collaboration with Associate Professor Corey Siegel, Director of Dartmouth-Hitchcock IBD Centre, Lebanon, NH, USA and Professor Afaf Girgis Director of Psycho-Oncology Research Group at the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. Design of this web-based tool was based on survey results from 460 UC patients in both USA and Australia with refinement of the decision aid (DA) following feedback by UC patients and review by leading IBD experts.  The DA addresses patient concerns around the diagnosis and complications of UC including colorectal cancer; the types of medical treatments available for UC and patient fears of treatment related adverse events, in particular cancer; and finally possible surgical treatment options for UC and the associated pros and cons.

A stepped wedge trial (SWT) will be conducted to test the implementation of the UC decision aid versus standard care in clinical practice. This initial trial will include four sites within Sydney over three years, with expansion to a national trial anticipated. Primary outcomes measures will include Patient Empowerment and Patient Quality of Life. Secondary outcome measures will include Medication Adherence, UC Disease Activity, Unplanned Hospital Admissions and Anxiety and Depression.  Acceptability of the DA will also be assessed. The candidate for this PhD project will conduct the NSW arm of this SWT. The candidate will develop strong experience in undertaking translational research in the clinical setting, including evaluation of the implementation of a DA and its translation into clinical practice. Pending results of this trial, it is anticipated that this UCDA may become a daily tool for use in the management of UC.

The successful PhD candidate will be enrolled in the South Western Sydney Clinical School, UNSW Medicine, UNSW; and located at the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research in Liverpool, Sydney. This innovative independent not-for-profit research organisation houses approximately 200 researchers and has a primary focus on translational research. It is strategically well-placed through co-location with the Liverpool Hospital, the biggest in Australia, and close links to other hospitals in the Sydney South West and partnering with SWSLHD, UNSW and UWS. The student will be co-supervised by Susan Connor, Senior Staff Specialist, Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Liverpool Hospital; and Professor Afaf Girgis, Director, Psycho-oncology Research Group, Centre for Oncology Education and Research Translation (CONCERT), Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research & UNSW, with access to world-class research facilities and expertise. Collaboration with Associate Professor Corey Siegel, well recognised for his work on SDM in IBD, will also continue during this project, providing further links internationally.

Payment Information

The value of this scholarship is AUD$35000 per annum for a period of 3 years. This does not include travel expenses required for implementation of the project nor additional financial support to attend one annual Australian Gastroenterology scientific meeting during the course of study.
