In case of polymer, it has the Golden Age in 50s~60s. Especially, during world war 2, plenty of amazing discoveries were invented. For example, synthetic rubber from Akron, Nylon and flouropolymer from Dupont. Many geniuses work in this area, and contributed great. But it was 50~60 years ago. Now it is very tough for polymer guys to do research. Basically, in pure polymer, which means completely research in polymer chemistry, physics or engineering, there are too many hot topics to conduct research. ATRP may the last hot topic in polymer area, but it was hardly found in applicaiton. Most professors in US try to connect their own polymer research to biology or energy in order to get funding support.

Before you do PhD, think the following questions through first.
do you really like research? can you enjoy working 16 hours in lab, every day? do you have high IQ? Can you stand continuous, never-end failure in all your experiments?  Do you do not care about money and poor living standard?  Do you like experiments more than your beautiful wife?

If you say yes to every question, you should go to PhD program, and you have more possibility (around 20%) to get a big success. But at the same time, you can not care about the reputation, success. and so on.  You should know, for most PhD, you will compete with other intelligent and  work-hard guys.

If you just want to get a decent job with reasonable payment, bachelor or master is much better than PhD. Keep in mind, if you do PhD, you will do research in your whole life. Otherwise, just waste your life.
