The second response is correct, i.e. first instinct leads one to respond exactly as  readbycandle  would
The bigger lesson is to know when NOT to follow one's first instinct, i.e. NOT everything you see in textbooks is worth learning

  "We never thought she would play so well, but we were all proven wrong"
