The Fermi energy of Li is higher than the low unoccupied molecular orbital of the commonly used liquid electrolytes. As a result, the electrolytes can be reduced on the surface of the Li anode to form a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer, causing a remarkable irreversible capacity loss and low deposition efficiency of Li upon charging.For practical Li-S batteries, this condition may lower the energy output of the system by requiring an excessive amount of Li to pair with S cathode.
