However, their susceptibility to damage from low velocity impact events, coupled with a deficiency of a reliable and robust predictive analysis tool suitable for design purposes, has resulted in a highly conservative design approach. As a further consequence, composite airframe development requires extensive physical testing to meet certification requirements, which is costly and time consuming. The aim of this project is to work with Bombardier Aerospace Belfast (BAB) to develop a suitable design tool for efficiently predicting the initiation and propagation of damage in realistic composite aerostructures. A sophisticated, high-fidelity composite damage model has been developed by Prof Falzon’s research group which has shown great promise in predicting damage and the residual strength of damaged composite structures. This tool will be further refined and validated using an extensive experimental database which BAB have established through their extensive testing programmes. Once the tool is fully validated, it will be used to gain further insight into the behaviour of CFRP structures to damage-inducing loads and lead to the development of efficient preliminary design methods and tools which will allow the initial design of composite aerostructural components with superior damage tolerance characteristics. The studentship provides UK fees and a tax-free stipend of ￡13,863 p.a with an additional ￡1450 available for Graduate Teaching Assistant duties. Outstanding International applicants will be considered. Queen’s University Belfast is a member of the Russell Group (the UK’s leading researchintensive universities). The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering was rated in the top 10 UK Engineering Schools in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008). Applicants should hold or expect to hold a minimum 2.1 Hons (or equivalent) degree in a relevant discipline such as Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
