Dear Dr. XX:

Thank you for your recent letter inquiring about a postdoctoral position in my laboratory.  At the present time, it is unlikely that I will have salary funds for making further appointments in the forthcoming year.  If you are able to obtain your own funding, I would be delighted to consider your application further.  At that time, I would need three letters of recommendation and copies of your undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
