Abstract
Recent advancements in morphology control and surface functionalization of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have enhanced the biocompatibility of these materials with high surface areas and pore volumes. Several recent reports have demonstrated that the MSNs can be efficiently internalized by animal and plant cells. The functionalization of MSNs with organic moieties or other nanostructures brings controlled release and molecular recognition capabilities to these mesoporous materials for drug/gene delivery and sensing applications, respectively. Herein, we review recent research progress on the design of functional MSN materials with various mechanisms of controlled release, along with the ability to achieve zero release in the absence of stimuli, and the introduction of new characteristics to enable the use of nonselective molecules as screens for the construction of highly selective sensor systems.

Abstract:

The encapsulation of enzymes and other proteins into inorganic host materials has attracted considerable attention over the past few years. This research has demonstrated that biomolecules immobilized in inorganic matrixes retain their functional characteristics to a large extent. These new materials are of interest for applications as (optically based) biosensors and biocatalysts. We review the growing field of amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, and whole cells adsorbed (immobilized) onto ordered mesoporous silica and carbon molecular sieves. Strategies for the preparation of mesoporous supports and the essential properties of the resulting materials with respect to the envisaged applications are presented. Basic effects of the nature of the adsorption and various aspects of the application of these materials as biosensors, bicatalysts, and for drug release are discussed. Outlook of potential applications and further challenges are also provided.

Abstract
Titanium-substituted mesoporous molecular sieves were prepared post-synthetically by applying Ti-butoxide in ethanol solutions of different concentrations to MCM-41, MCM-48, and KIT-1. The catalysts obtained were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV¡ÀVis spectroscopies, XAS, and N2 physisorption. Incorporation of Ti seems to promote further crosslinking of the mesoporous walls of the samples, and resulted in wall thickness  ncreases. The post-synthetically prepared Ti-mesoporous derivatives using titanium butoxide grafting were catalytically active for the selective oxidation of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol with H2O2. Their activities depended on the Ti concentration of the catalysts. Comparison works with hydrothermally prepared Ti-MCM-41, Ti-HMS or post-synthetically prepared Ti-mesopore catalysts, either using titanocene grafting or by TiCl4 atom planting method, are also reported.
