Research in Cleaner Synthesis Technology This involves an holistic, matrix approach to chemical synthesis of high value added products including development of new chemical methodologies and products. The main research directions are: Enabling, green technologies Green organic reactions Green reaction media Projects include the green synthesis of engineering plastics using water as a reaction solvent; lignin degradation study and its biomass application; development of a novel polymer recycling system using photopolymerization; and nano green technology studies. Often, within the product portfolio of these industries, particularly those manufacturing high value-added compounds, poor atom efficiency is achieved through wasteful methods of low productivity. This is related to choice of reagents, inefficient recovery and purification, and the large quantities of ultra high quality water required. In the Centre for Green Chemistry's Green Biotechnology Platform, emphasis has been placed on developing synthetic, analytical and macromolecular approaches that provide clean and sustainable chemical technologies for high-tech industries.
