Like It or Lump It If you tell someone to like it or lump it, you mean they must accept a situation they do not like, because they cannot change it. And this phrase "like it or lump it" is said of an unpleasant outcome that one has no choice but to accept - one can either endure it willingly or endure it with suffering. For example: 一个问题的解决方案在争论未果之后，老板拍着桌子说："就照我说的办！你们同不同意都得执行！" 这句话用英文来说就是: If you don't like it, you must/can/may lump it. Lump在这里作"忍受"讲。这个字的来源有两个说法：有人说，它是由 look (看来)、grumpy (脾气坏)二字合成的，指人们强忍不如意之事的样子；另外一些文字学者则说，lump是模仿grump (发脾气)、mump (愠怒)等字而成的，之所以用l作字头，是要跟like字押头韵(alliterate)。这里跟之前提到的"As cool as cucumber"有点相似。。。 所以，lump只可以在like it or lump it这个成语里解作"忍受"，否则就不可以作"忍受"讲了。 例如: This is my decision, like it or lump it! 这就是我的决定，你喜不喜欢都得接受!
