1. General Scope

The Journal of Applied Entomology publishes original articles on current research in applied entomology, including mites and spiders in terrestrial ecosystems. Research on stored product pests will be also accepted. The language of publication is English. All manuscripts are evaluated in a peer-review process.

2. Pre-submission English-language editing

Authors, whose native language is not English, are requested to consult a native English speaker before submission of their manuscript. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/english_language.asp

All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.

3. Recommendation of reviewers

Authors are requested to recommend at least 3 potential reviewers for their manuscript in the cover letter.

4. Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts have to be submitted electronically. Go to the Journal of Applied Entomology Manuscript Central site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jappent

and create an account. The submission must be done from the corresponding author’s account.

6. Manuscript Requirements

Manuscripts that do not strictly adhere to the instructions will not be accepted for further processing.

External form of the main text

Short communications and original articles must include Title, Short title (Running Head), Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables and Figures.

Original articles should not exceed 6,000 words
Short communications should not exceed 1,500 words.

The manuscript has to be submitted as Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format.
The lines of the manuscript must be numbered consecutively throughout the entire manuscript.

Scientific names of genus, species, and subspecies should be formatted in italics.

The full name of species and subspecies must be used when first mentioned in a paper, and its abbreviation used thereafter.

Abbreviations must be explained in the text.

Authors are requested to use the International System of Units (SI, Système International d'Unités).

Manuscript title
Please limit the title to 16 words.

Manuscript short title
Please provide a short title (running head), a maximum of 8 words.

Abstract
The Abstract should refer to the main hypotheses and results and emphasize the key findings of the research, indicating the generality and applicability of the results.

The Abstract should not exceed 300 words.

Keywords
Provide a maximum of 7 key words to the abstract. Avoid overlap with the title.

References

References in Articles
We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

Each reference should conform to the examples given below, with author names separated only by a comma as shown. Full stops should not be used in the forename initials. The name of a journal should be given in the abbreviated form, strictly following the codes given in http://library.caltech.edu/reference/abbreviations/

The References should be listed in alphabetical order according to the surname of the first author and should give the full title of the paper. Anonymous contributions should be cited at the beginning of the bibliography.

In the running text, citations should be made as in the following examples: Beroks and Bode (1999), or (Richter 1991, 1993; Starck and Schneider 2001). Up to two authors, give the names; for more than two authors, give the name of the first author followed by "et al."

a. From journals

Unpublished work should only be cited when it has been accepted for publication, and then together with the name of the journal in which it has been accepted.

Tables
Tables must be uploaded separately. Tables must be self-explanatory and accompanied by legends. Please number tables consecutively in the order in which they occur in the text. Tables should be created using the table function in MS Word. Please mark the position of the tables in the text.

Figures
Figures must be uploaded separately. Figure legends should be included with the main text of the manuscript, after the references.

Please number figures consecutively in the order in which they occur in the text. All figures must be provided in Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format or JPEG. Please mark the position of the figures in the text.

Line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (photo, shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible. Graphs with an x and y axis should not be enclosed in frames.

Colour figures (including photographs) must be accompanied by the Colour Work Agreement form (CWA). This form can be downloaded as a PDF file from the internet. If you are unable to download the form, please contact the editorial office and they will be able to email or fax a form to you.The cost for colour printing must be paid by the author.

Any article received by Wiley-Blackwell with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.


7. Supporting Information
Supporting information can include additional figures, tables, appendices, videos or other data sets (including raw data, if appropriate). The most common video file types are supported providing they do not exceed a file size of 50MB. Authors wishing to submit larges files are advised to contact the journal's editor. This information will not be published in the printed edition of the journal, but will be viewable in the online edition. Supporting information should be succinct and designed with the aim to allow a complete and full understanding of the manuscript. Authors are encouraged to shift material of secondary importance to the online Supporting Information.


8. Copyright Assignment
Authors are required to assign the Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) to publish their paper to Wiley-Blackwell and the Journal of Applied Entomology. Publication cannot proceed without a signed copy of this agreement(Papers subject to government or Crown copyright are exempt from this requirement). 9. Proof correction and offprints
The corresponding author will receive proofs via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF file which should be reviewed and returned without delay using the resubmission instructions at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jappent

10. Book reviews
Book reviews are usually published in the fields of ecology and entomology. At the beginning of each book review, precise bibliographic details must be given in the following form: Family name, followed by the Christian name initials of the author of the book; the book's title; which edition (if not the first); place of publication; name of publisher; year of publication; number of pages, figures and tables; ISBN; binding and retail price.

11. OnlineOpen
OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen, the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley Online Library, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive.
