Fig. 2d shows that the α’-Al phase is growing in the grain boundary. A simple diagram can be used to explain this new phenomenon, as shown in fig.3. The primary η phase is surrounded by an α’-Al phase. However, the unrefined alloy has a dendritic structure (η-Zn phase) surrounded by an eutectic structure. Early studies [] have demonstrated that in the hypoeutectic alloy departed from the eutectic point, a divorced eutectic transformation will occur under the casting conditions. It indicates that new η phase will grow on the the original existing eutectic η phase. The second phase α’-Al phase will stay in grain boundary. As a result, the eutectic structure of the η phase no longer exists. In addition, by adding a master alloy, the Al3Zr promotes the formation of the α’-Al phase, which distributes the uniformity of the grain boundaries. In fig. 3b, a lamellar eutectic grain structure and a columnar eutectic grain structure are also observed which are far from the η phase. There is no nuclei for the η phase transformation from the eutectic structure, whereby it still shows the eutectic structure characteristic.
