[交流] Photocatalytic films by florescent bulbs and light-emitting diodes

A thin film that kills viruses and germs by responding to light could revolutionize the fight against communicable illness.

The film, which is expected to be released by the chemical firm Sumitomo Chemical Co. by the end of the year, is designed to be laid on walls, handrails and other interior features in public facilities like hospitals and schools.

It kills viruses by using photocatalytic features to decompose organic substances, such as protein, by reacting to light. Photocatalytic films are already used on outside walls and windows on some buildings to keep them clean, but until now they have only worked outside, reacting to the sun's ultraviolet light.

The revolutionary feature of the new film is that it reacts to light emitted by florescent bulbs and light-emitting diodes, thus enabling use indoors.

When conducting tests using highly resistant goose parvoviruses, more than 99.9 percent of viruses were killed by the film after being exposed to a light-emitting diode for six hours.

Kazuaki Takehara, a professor of veterinary medicine at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, said: "The film had similar results with influenza. Because it worked well with the most resistant viruses, we can expect to see the film kill most other viruses and germs more efficiently."

Sumitomo hopes the film will be used in hospitals, schools, aircrafts, food plants and other places where infections can spread. It also expects to sell some film to general consumers.
