A deficiency for the downconversion with lanthanides is their poor absorption strength determined by the nature of 4f-4f parity forbidden transition. One promising solution has been proposed, by coupling the optical active RE ions with the electromagnetic near-field felt from noble metal nanoparticles (e.g. Au or Ag), called as the surface plasmon resonance (SPR). In the vicinity of noble metal nanoparticles, typically several tens of nanometers, the collective oscillation of valence electrons leads to the highly localized electric field, therefore the increase of optical absorption; meanwhile, the lanthanide¡¯s photonic mode density (PMD) is increased, thus boosting the excitation efficiency as well as the radiative decay rate. As early as 1985, Malta et al. have observed the enhancement of Eu3+ emissions in the presence of Ag, and attempted to prove the SPR effect in a theoretical way, the explanation of which has been widely accepted. Recently, SPR enhanced up/down-conversion luminescence of RE ions, realized in core-shell nanophases, polymers, and glasses, were extensively investigated. However, there have been no reports on the enhancement of RE ions¡¯ luminescence efficiency for quantum cutting, from which the optical response of solar cells is supposed to be greatly improved.
