MTC, the tipping point of the chip formation ,has great effect on surface quality of the ultra-precision machining. With the cutting thickness getting closer to the MTC, the cutting surface quality becomes better. But once the cutting thickness is below the MTC, there will be plowing phenomenon, and the plowing surface quality gets deteriorated. With cutting thickness gradually decreasing, plowing phenomenon gradually disappears, until the elastic-plastic deformation occurres, which helps to improvethe surface quality. When ultra-precision machining, to control the cutting parameters, so that the cutting thickness is always greater than the MTC and plowing phenomenon does not occur, is a major method to obtain excellent surface quality. While how to select the cutting parameters has been so far based on the experience of the processor, there lacks theoretical basis. Therefore, many technical issues concerning ultra-precision machining theory are not clear and yet to be perfected. |
