【Pure water】Top 10 net buzzwords of 2010
|

|
I have come across top 10 net buzzwords of 2010 at China.org.cn that I think creative and thought-provoking. What's your opinion? Do you think they represent the social trend of 2010? Vote your favorite. If you find any more popular online, please share. 1.English:Brother Sharp Chinese:犀利哥(xī lì gē) "Brother Sharp" is the nickname of a homeless man who used to spend his days and nights wandering the streets of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. Thanks to his "good looks and sharp dress sense," he has gained star status and become one of the most talked about personalities in Chinese cyberspace. 2.English:material girl Chinese:拜金女 (bài jīn nǚ) Ma Nuo, 22, a model from Beijing, told a jobless man who invited her to ride on his bike that she would rather cry in a BMW. 3.English:microblogging Chinese:织围脖(zhī wéi bó) Much the same as Twitter, microblogs allow users to post messages of 140 Chinese characters or less via the Web, SMS or MMS. Since "微博(microblog)" in Chinese sounds similar to "围脖(scarf)", the activity of "updating one's microblog (更新微博)" is jokingly dubbed "knitting a scarf (织围脖)" in China. 4.English:gelivable Chinese:给力 (gěi lì) "Geili" literally means "to give power" but is now accepted as an adjective describing something "cool" or "awesome". 5.English:My father is Li Gang! Chinese:我爸是李刚! (wǒ bà shì lǐ gāng) "My Father is Li Gang!" became one of the most popular catchphrases in China after a hit-and-run scandal. Li Qiming was alleged to have said "Sue me if you dare. My father is Li Gang," after driving his car into two students while under the influence of alcohol, on October 16 at Hebei University in Beishi District, which is under his father's administration. He did not stop the car until he was intercepted by security guards and students on campus. One of the victims later died despite emergency rescue efforts. His remarks have spread online and provoked a mixture of angry and mocking reactions from millions of Chinese citizens. 6.English:ant tribe Chinese:蚁族 (yǐ zú) The term "ant tribe" was coined by Lian Si, the author of a book about China's post-80s generation, to refer to recent graduates who crowd into slums in the country's big cities in search of work. The high cost of living and skyrocketing rents have left them struggling on the margins of society. 7.English:kidding mungbean, brutal garlic and mad corn Chinese:豆你玩,蒜你狠,玉米疯(dòu nǐ wán, suàn nǐ hěn, yù mǐ fēng) Humorous terms that express the rage and resignation of consumers faced with crazy food prices. 8.English:pseudo-girl Chinese:伪娘 (wěi niáng) Liu Zhu, 19, rose to stardom overnight after his cross-dressing performance on a TV show. The word "weiniang" or "pseudo-girl" has entered Chinese from the Japanese word "Nisemusume," and refers to handsome boys who have a female appearance through their fashion style. The Japanese word is popularly used in comics and dramas. 9.English:Xiao Yueyue Chinese:小月月(xiǎo yuè yue) "Xiao Yueyue" rose to fame after a friend blogged about her bizarre behavior on a shopping trip to Shanghai. 10.English:lamb style Chinese:羊羔体 (yáng gāo tǐ) Became a buzzword after an official whose name sounds like the Chinese word for lamb controversially won the Lu Xun Prize for a poem that was panned by critics. |
