[交流] 【Discussion】how much money to give is proper when others get married?

one student in my laboratory will get married in a week. as for the convention, i need to give him a red envelope. how much money should i give to him? do as others or give the right quantity with my ability? in this city, give money to the one to be married is called "sui_li". and it is very serious, at least 600RMB. as a student in school, to give those money is a diffcult thing to do although i have done once in September.however, it is not a good thing when they all give 600 while i give with my ability which is far less than it. i know i'll do as others in the end. but what for? in my opinon, i think "sui_li" should be a form to show my congratuations and wondeful wish to the new couple. now, it turns to be a heavy chain.

to a student, 600yuan is a large number, i am not able to afford it.
i do agree with you, it should be a form to show sincere wishes and congratulations, should not be a matter of the number of money.

if you give less than others, will the one who is going to marry understand you?

i'm not sure. but to give less than others is definitely improper. after all i don't want to be a troublemaker. the less trouble the better. so i'll do as others. although  it may contain less benidiction. above all, when i get married the money will go back ,if no inflation..
