The Gouy phase also named longitudinal phase delay e(z)=arctan(z/zr) This phase shifts by π as the beam passes through the focus, in addition to the normal change in phase as the beam propagates. Physically, this shift is the result of the uncertainty principle. The transverse confinement of the beam at the focus necessarily implies an increase in the uncertainty in its transverse momentum, which leads to a change in phase of the beam. |
